Even if you did not install gta 5 through steam the fivem app uses a program from steam called Source SDK, this means to join fivem or redm servers you need steam logged in, open and running in the background.

Just in case you didn't understand using the epic version is fine, just make a steam account, download the steam app and run it before you try play again.
