I applied for the firefighter role on the 27th of feb, but still not heard anything. is anyone able to chase it up?

Nope, the applications are looked at in large batches starting from the oldest ones and moving forward. If yours hasn't moved from "pending acknowledgement" that just means there is quite a few people before you. 

All of the ems jobs are like this, I believe that police have it the worst but the others aren't far behind. Good luck with the app.
